Estepona is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Costa del Sol coast, which still maintains its old Andalusian charm. It is located on the western end of the coast at the foot of the Sierra Bermeja mountain range.
Cobbled narrow streets, a fishing port, Spanish cafes and bars lining the sidewalks, picturesque shops and wine bars, all combined with the modernly equipped Puerto Deportivo (zone for rest and relaxation), tourist facilities, and golden sandy beaches make Estepona a pleasant and interesting place for tourists to stay.
For many years, fishing, agriculture, and livestock farming were the main economic sectors in Estepona and remain an important source of income for many residents of the area.
However, for more than a decade, tourism has become a crucial economic factor due to the city’s redevelopment, beautiful weather, well-maintained sandy beaches such as La Rada and Cristo Beach, along with exceptional tourism offerings including golf, a marina, and excellent dining options. All these elements make Estepona a city that attracts thousands of tourists each year.
Many of the beaches in Estepona have been awarded the Blue Flag for their high standards of cleanliness and hygiene. Most of them have good facilities, including children's play areas, showers, beachside restaurants, and water sports. Right in the city, you'll find La Rada Beach, a long golden sand beach where you can enjoy activities like kayaking or windsurfing. The beautiful El Cristo beach is located to the west of the city and is an excellent beach for families with children. Other beaches nearby include Playa Costa Natura, Sabinillas, Puerto Duquesa, and Sotogrande, and about 50 minutes' drive away are the stunning beaches of Tarifa and Costa de la Luz.
Estepona is one of the most popular golf vacation destinations in Spain, with an abundance of golf courses suitable for all levels. Estepona's golf course is popular and challenging, with one of the most famous courses on Costa Del Sol being the Paraiso Golf Club located between Estepona and Marbella; it's a serene course with stunning mountainous scenery. The renowned Valderrama golf club is located nearby in Sotogrande, hosting the annual Volvo Masters tournament.
Estepona is located between the Gibraltar and Malaga airports. It takes about 50 minutes by car to reach Estepona from both locations. The surrounding nature invites hiking in the hills just behind the town. Besides beautiful views from the hilltops, there are also many historical and natural landmarks to see. The ski resort in Sierra Nevada is about two hours away by car (the resort provides full service, including ski equipment and clothing rentals). For water sports enthusiasts, there are opportunities for diving, fishing, renting a paddleboard, or taking boat trips nearby. Adrenaline lovers can take advantage of the newly built go-kart arena located nearby. Children will certainly enjoy a visit to the safari or a dolphin watching tour with the option to swim with them.
There are conflicting records which place the Roman fishing and farming settlements of Salduba and Silniana to the west of Marbella. However, it seems more likely that at least Silniana was located in the current site of San Pedro de Alcantara. Although it was destroyed in an earthquake in the 4th century AD, and despite its apparent age, there are no real records that can prove one or the other. The name Estepona is rather derived from its Moorish occupation, when it was called Astabbuna. Like most of the Iberian Peninsula, Estepona was also the subject of battles between Moors and Christians. In 1457, it was occupied once again by Enrique IV of Castile, who built a church over the old mosque, and it was this church that became the center of the municipality we now know as Estepona. In 1729, the king granted Estepona its own status and since then it began to develop its own identity, apart from Marbella, and to develop its industrial character.
Just ten minutes from Estepona, towards San Roque, you can find La Duquesa marina with many restaurants, bars, boutiques, and fantastic La Duquesa golf course. From Estepona, you can explore the beautiful inland scenery, as well as typical towns like Casares, Jubrique, Genaguacil, and Manilva with the famous Roman baths "La Hedionda." Gibraltar is about a 40-minute drive away and the beach paradise of Tarifa around a 45-minute drive away. If you feel adventurous, you can catch a ferry to Morocco from nearby Algeciras and spend a few days there shopping and touring. If you are interested in historical sites and archaeological findings, then you won't be disappointed since many interesting historical sites, including the ruins of Castillo de Nicio, La Torre del Reloj (watchtower), Las Ruinas del Castillo de San Luis, and Estepona's town square - Plaza de las Flores - are located in the area.
